About Us

If you educate a man, you educate an individual.
But if we educate a woman, we educate a family.

At GIR, we’re the people who help people

About Our Organization

Global Institute for Rehabilitation Inc. (GIR) is dedicated to addressing the complex issue of narcotic drug addiction and its association with infectious diseases in Afghanistan. Leveraging decades of research and expertise from Afghan American professionals, GIR has developed a unique and comprehensive treatment solution that is truly groundbreaking in its approach.

Background

For over four decades, since the Soviet–Afghan War in 1979, Afghanistan has been a country in crisis. The 2018 Human Development Report ranked Afghanistan 168th out of 189 countries on the Human Development Index. The nation’s most pressing challenges include:

  • Massive underutilization of agricultural land, with less than 30% being cultivated.
  • Severe shortages of irrigation systems, as most were damaged or destroyed during the war.
  • Widespread lack of safe drinking water, with 95% of the rural population having no access to clean water.
  • Extremely low literacy rates, with only 44% of adult males and 13% of adult females able to read and write.
  • High unemployment and extremely limited job opportunities.
  • War-related disabilities, affecting approximately 4% of the population directly, while indirectly impacting up to 10% of their family members and communities.

Afghanistan Women’s Online Education

In 2021, following the collapse of the Afghan government and the Taliban’s return to power, women’s access to higher education was severely restricted due to the regime’s belief that women should not hold authoritative positions over men. Given these restrictions, we sought alternative ways to provide education for Afghan women. Through technology, we have successfully connected Afghan women to the world, enabling them to learn, work remotely, and earn an income from their homes. This initiative has achieved significant and measurable success in empowering Afghan women despite the challenges they face.

The Legacy of War and Its Devastating Impact

Decades of war have left Afghanistan with a broken social fabric and a catastrophic lack of political awareness among the younger generation. One of the most devastating periods was the 1994 civil war, where fundamentalist Muslim factions launched vengeful attacks against other Muslim groups, leading to genocide, horrific violence against women, and brutal executions of children in front of their parents. These tragedies have caused severe psychological trauma, deepening divisions between Afghan ethnic groups.

In addition to these humanitarian crises, Afghanistan continues to struggle with:

  • Political and judicial corruption
  • Ethnic and religious conflicts
  • Widespread poverty and famine
  • The unchecked brutality and injustices of warlords
  • The growing influence of domestic and international terrorist organizations

Afghanistan remains in urgent need of comprehensive political, economic, and social reforms to rebuild the country and restore hope for its people.

Research and Development – Our continuous research efforts focus on improving treatment methods and developing innovative solutions to ensure we remain at the forefront of addiction treatment.
